Carlie's Dizziness
Carlie, a 29 year old events manager presented to me with reports of frequent “dizzy” episodes. She experienced these on a daily basis and would describe them as “things were spinning around her”. These episodes began six months ago and were gradually becoming worse. Apart from this dizziness, she was fit and healthy.
On further questioning, she confirmed that she had consulted her G.P. regarding these dizzy spells. Following a detailed account of her symptoms and her medical history being taken a thorough examination of her spine, shoulders, head and neck followed. From this it was apparent that there was a huge amount of tension and reduction in movement in her upper back and at the base of her skull. It is thought that nerves located in these regions can influence the perception of balance of a person. So we set to work on these “problem” areas.
As well as seeing Carlie on a weekly basis for three weeks, she was also prescribed some gentle exercises, which she could perform to improve the mobility in her upper back. She was very pleased with the swift response to treatment and after the third visit, she was no longer experiencing this problem.
Unfortunately, due to the busy lifestyle which people lead, the resultant stress can manifest in different ways. In this case Carlie’s stress was expressed as dizziness. Many people can suffer headaches, neck and shoulder pain, IBS and much more, as a result of stress within their lives.
