Cranial Osteopathy
Cranial Osteopathy was developed by Dr Willian Garner Sutherland (who was a student of Dr A T Still – founder of osteopathy). It utilises the cranial rhythm of the cerebral spinal fluid (fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord), which influences the entire body. It is a gentle and non invasive form of treatment that is acheived through subtle manipulation at the cranium (skull) or distal (peripheral) parts of the body .

In the early 20th century, academics believed that there was no movement at the 'cranial sutures' (the strong joints holding the bones of the cranium together), despite osteopaths' belief that they could palpate some movement. Now however science has been successful in demonstrating that movements are produced between the cranial bones, giving further supporting evidence for the theories.
The importance of this movement is that any stasis, or locking of cranial joints will affect the flow of Cerebral Spinal Fluid, and therefore the health of underlying brain tissue. This may eventually manifest itself in terms of illness, or neurological problems. Through subtle and gentle techniques an osteopath can facilitate the movement between cranial bones, and thereby re-establish normal cranial rhythms, allowing the body to restore itself to normal health.
Cranial Osteopathy is so gentle that it is safe and suitable for people of all ages. Indeed, it is often appropriate when other therapies may be unsafe, such as during pregnancy, after an operation, accident, fall or injury, and for young babies, and in fragile or acutely painful conditions. It has become renowned for its treatment of infant colic and infant sleep problems, but it is also highly effective in the treatment of a broad spectrum of other childhood and adult conditions.
