Mrs F - Headaches
Mrs F, a pleasant 46 year old lady, presented with pain at the front and back of her head and upper back pain. The headaches were intermittent and lasted from a few hours to a whole day. Her occupation involved long hours working with young people, as well as sitting at a computer for long periods and driving long distances. It was noted that she was on medication for hypothyroidism and high blood pressure and had regular GP check ups.
On examination she had a forward bent posture and rounded shoulders.
Her neck and upper back had reduced range of movements. The upper back was very tender and painful at the back of the head.
Soft tissue and osteopathic techniques were used to release all this tension and tightness which increased the movements of these areas. On further questioning I found out that she had not been taking her blood pressure medication. This could have been causing the pain at the back of the head and the frontal headaches were as a result of eye strain. She had not seen an optician for more than two years and after having an eye test it was found that she required glasses.
Posture and stretching exercises were prescribed for neck and upper back when sitting at the computer and driving. Stress of working long hours and not taking breaks was assessed. Since wearing glasses and taking her medication regularly the lady’s headaches have reduced and with some lifestyle improvements her demeanour has improved.
